THIS GROUP GOT its start in the Twilight Zone reading Stephanie Meyer's best-selling vampire series. But they've branched out since then.

You read the entire series in 1 month? Weren't you, like, ready to suck someone's blood?
Funny thing is that Amy Williams, who started the club, thought the series was too juvenile for a group of 30-somethings. And guess who couldn't put the books down? She read the entire series in a week.

Your name—tell us what the initials stand for.
NBCBC? It stands for Non-Book Club Book Club. We made fun of ourselves because of the nerdy rap book clubs get. So we kept saying, “Well it's not really a book club—but, really, it’s a book club." And it stuck!

How did NBCBC get started?
Well...we all love to read, and we read the same genre of books. We thought a book club would help us break out of our comfort zone and read something we wouldn't typically choose for ourselves.

I love your logo—with the popcorn in the mugs.
Uh, it's beer? We like to enjoy a girls' night at a local bar & grill after the discussions. [Oh. Duh. —Editor]

You had a fun Awards Ceremony. Tell us...
It followed our Full Circle meeting—meaning that every member (all 9 of us) had chosen a book.

We presented awards for Best Book Choice, Best Laugh, Most Likely To Get A Demerit. We even gave awards to the husbands who made our logo, T-shirts and stickers for us. [Ah. A guy made the logo. Explains the beer. —Editor]

You also created a quite a roster of club offices...
First, our Executive Team—President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer—the usual.

Then we added a Spiritual Adviser and a Court Jester...important positions.

We've also created a Director of IT & Photography...a Director of Marketing...a Director of Charitable Giving...and a Director of Human Resources. We plan on taking our offices much more seriously in the coming year!

You guys are totally serious! So tell us what you've you read.
Here's our reading list since January (2009) when we started our group:

Fool
In the Woods
Love and Death: The Murder of Kurt Cobain by Max Wallace, Ian Halperin
Menage (Black Lace series) by Emma Holly
My Booky Wook by Russell Brand
Rant
Rules of Attraction
Sand, Sun, Seduction by Stephanie Bond, Leslie Kelly, Lori Wilde
A Thousand Splendid Suns
Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer

Any favorites?
Love and Death was a clear favorite—we even took a vote. Everyone is a fan of the band Nirvana, so we found the book's discussion of the "facts" in the case fascinating.

[The book is an investigation into the 1994 death of Kurt Cobain, one of the era's great rock icons. Although the death was ruled a suicide, the authors contend it was...something else. —Editor]

Least favorite?
My Booky Wook by Russell Brand was disappointing. We chose it because we had just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns, which was so sad, and we thought a comedy would lighten the mood. But it wasn't funny or entertaining at all—few, if any, of us even finished it.

How do you choose your books?
Every member gets to choose whatever she wants to read. We meet at her house...and after discussion, we head out on the town!
