The dearth of complex characters is overshadowed by the intensity of Clara and Izzy's life circumstances and internal struggles. Both stories are relentlessly bleak; Wiseman makes no attempt to sugarcoat what Izzy and Clara go through, representing them as strong women who are determined not to succumb to their challenges.
