10 Tips for Reading with Kids

1. Read for 30 minutes every day. Set aside a special time of day.

2. For the very young, find books with large bright pictures or touch-and-feel objects.

3. Find small books toddlers can hold, or ones with cardboard pages that are easy to turn.

4. Find rhyming books: children respond to and learn from rhyming patterns.

5. Be an active reader. Point out what's interesting in the story and ask questions: What do you think happens next?

6. Be willing to read the same books again (and again): kids love repetition.

7. Allow your youngster to "read" back to you. Even if it's only "pretend reading," memorization is an important part of learning to read.

8. Set aside a special place to read—a comfy reading corner with the child's books.

9. Show by example: make sure children know you like to read, too. Let them see you read—books, magazines, and newspapers.

10. Visit your library—attend story hour and browse the shelves together. If the library has a kids' card, sign up for one.
